The Ultimate Guide to Rio de Janeiro Carnival 2027: Everything You Need to Know

The samba school parades at the Sambadrome are Rio Carnival’s worldwide media reference: towering floats, elaborate costumes and powerful percussion broadcast across the globe. But Carnival in Rio goes far beyond the spectacle on television.

It lives in moving street processions, spontaneous gatherings, pre-Carnival weekends and dance floors that keep going after the holiday. For LGBTQ+ travelers, there are queer parties, alternative electronic events and an adult nightlife scene to explore too.

This Rio Carnival 2027 guide starts in the streets, then covers the Sambadrome, our favorite parties and practical ways to plan your trip.

Rio’s street Carnival 2027: dates, blocos and cortejos

Rio’s street Carnival begins long before the official holiday. Its unofficial opening traditionally happens on the first Sunday of the year — January 3 in 2027 — when blocos bring music and crowds into the city’s streets.

From then on, weekend gatherings build the pre-Carnival season, with opportunities to join throughout January and into February. The opening date describes a tradition, not a confirmed schedule for individual blocos.

The main stretch begins on Friday, February 5, 2027. Celebrations happen throughout the day and night, continuing through Ash Wednesday, February 10, with some gatherings carrying into Thursday morning.

Post-Carnival gatherings continue across the three following weekends: February 13–14, February 20–21 and February 27–28. Numbers, dates and locations vary: check current announcements before heading out.

A true bloco (street party group) doesn’t stay still!

Many of Rio’s blocos follow a cortejo — a moving procession through the streets, with musicians leading and revelers following, singing and dancing along the way.

People join, leave and discover new encounters as the procession moves through the city. Rather than watching from one spot, you become part of the celebration.

The announced address is often the concentração, where everyone gathers before departure. The saída is when the bloco starts moving. Arrive later, and you may need to find its current location rather than head to the original meeting point.

Some blocos do perform in a fixed location, but a cortejo invites you to experience Carnival on the move.

A scene that changes every year

Rio’s street Carnival is shaped by people, encounters and spontaneous movements. It does not repeat itself exactly from one year to the next.

New gatherings emerge, familiar names change format and routes shift. Alongside the announced program, smaller gatherings circulate through friends and WhatsApp groups, growing as people join. Some move between locations as conditions change.

The appeal is discovery: playful names, unexpected encounters and room for the street to shape the experience.

Real-time information makes the difference

Knowing where a gathering is right now can matter more than knowing its name. A crowd may have moved, a street may be blocked or a gathering may already be dispersing. Recent updates can be more useful than schedules published weeks earlier.

Check the source and timing before crossing the city. Rumors, outdated locations and invented departure times can circulate around eagerly anticipated gatherings.

Practical tips for street Carnival

Wear comfortable shoes, carry water and use sun protection. Keep valuables secure and agree on a meeting point with friends before entering a crowded area.

Leave space between events. Crossing the city can take longer during Carnival, and a morning bloco followed by a full Sambadrome night is a substantial day.

Grandstands: put the parades at the center of your night

Grandstands offer a spectator-focused experience: floats, costumes, choreography and percussion, without the separate concerts and hospitality packages of major camarotes. The crowd still sings, cheers and celebrates.

Individual chairs and frisas, seated boxes closer to the parade route, provide other viewing options. Compare each category’s location and conditions.

Camarotes: parades, open bars and another party inside

A camarote combines parade viewing areas with hospitality and, depending on the venue, food, bars, DJs and concerts. Check the viewing areas, lineup and transfer arrangements included in your ticket. Premium hospitality does not guarantee an unobstructed view from every part of the venue.

Candybox: the most explicitly LGBTQ+ option in our selection

Candybox has the most explicitly LGBTQ+ identity among the camarotes featured here. Known as the first gay camarote at the Sambadrome, it has a history of programming directed toward the community.

Its 2027 edition still needs confirmation. Check dates, sales and the parade nights covered before planning around it.

Nosso Camarote: pop and premium hospitality

Planning for 2027: these are verified references from Rio Carnival 2026, not confirmed 2027 events. Check the organizers' official profiles for new dates, admission rules and ticket releases. Adult events are for ages 18 and over; participation is always optional.

For some adult travelers, cruising and sex-positive events are part of the itinerary. Dance parties, cruising bars, saunas and organized sex parties offer different experiences. An LGBTQ+ dance party is not a sex event simply because its audience is queer.

Our Rio gay saunas and cruising bars guide introduces venues and organizers including Dedalos, Rio G Spa, Casa Preta and Black Cat. Consult their current rules and programs before visiting.

Dedicated Carnival 2027 adult-event recommendations will be added once announced, with format, audience, dress code and official admission details. Follow venue rules, respect boundaries and ask before taking photographs.
