Rio de Janeiro Gay Travel Guide
Written by a Carioca
2025 Update
Hey! I’m John. As a frequent traveler, I know how tough it can be to find fresh, honest info about the local gay scene in a new city. That’s exactly why I started this guide — to make it easier for other guys to explore the best of gay Rio.
Let’s be real: things are always better when you’ve got a local friend to show you around. But if you don’t, that’s where I come in. I’m here to share real-time tips on beaches, parties, clubs, bars, cruising spots, restaurants, and whatever else is hot in town. No matter your vibe, you’ll find something that fits.
This site is a personal project, created to help other gay men feel welcome in Rio. It’s not sponsored – it’s built with love. If you'd like to support it, donations are appreciated ❤️
Need personalized tips or want to know what’s really happening this week? Feel free to message me on WhatsApp – I'm happy to help with 1-on-1 advice.

Rio de Janeiro Best Gay Bars, Clubs, Parties 2025
THE REAL PARTY IN RIO ISN'T INSIDE THE CLUBS!
Here’s something most tourists don’t know: Rio de Janeiro isn’t exactly a "club city." Sure, there are a few clubs around—but the best, most unforgettable nights? They happen at pop-up parties, street events, and open-air gatherings that pulse with energy, music, and people from all over the world. This might just be the most important tip you'll get about partying in Rio. And I’m here to keep you up to date—with the latest info for 2025—so you don’t miss a thing. The truth is: almost every weekend, there’s a hot new event catching everyone’s attention. These parties are spontaneous, creative, and constantly evolving.
Not sure where to go this week? I’m just a WhatsApp away for honest, local advice.
🎉 RIO GAY WEEKLY PARTIES
SAMBAY
📍 Terrasse Rio
🕕 Every Sunday, 6PM to 3AM
📲 @rodasambay
Sambay claims to be the largest LGBTQIAPN+ samba circle in the world, and it lives up to the hype. Expect an upscale crowd from South Rio, travelers from across Brazil, and, of course, international tourists. Samba, live music, and that unmistakable Carioca vibe make it a must.
FESTA TRETA
📍 @pinkflamingorio
🕘 Alternate Wednesdays, 9PM to 5AM
📲 @tretafesta
A hit with locals and tourists alike, TRETA! is one of Brazil’s biggest LGBTQIAPN+ party exports—with editions in São Paulo, New York, and even a Carnival bloco. Expect a high-energy mix of Brazilian pop, funk, and a crowd that’s diverse, sexy, and always ready to dance.
🌟 RIO’S "EVERY-ONCE-IN-A-WHILE" PARTIES
These are my personal favorites—the kind of events that truly define Rio’s underground scene. They're not your typical weekly parties, and that’s part of the magic. Most don’t happen on a fixed schedule, so the key is to follow them on Instagram to see what’s happening during your stay.
Some of them aren’t exclusively gay but are incredibly LGBTQIAPN+ friendly and packed with stylish, open-minded people.
🎧 I’ll also share some of my favorite DJs’ profiles soon—following them is a great way to discover what’s hot in town. Honestly, this section might be the most valuable tip in this entire guide if you're chasing the best music and the coolest crowds in Rio.
Pro tip: Many of these parties have editions outside of Rio too—check before buying tickets. Some are free with RSVP!

CALMA BAR – @calma.tocalma

SILÊNCIO IPANEMA – @silencio.ipanema
Open daily from 5PM. A favorite for after-beach drinks (especially Fridays and Sundays) or as a pre-party warm-up on Wednesdays before TRETA. Expect electronic beats and a stylish, mixed crowd.

Open every night, but the peak is Wednesday’s TRETA FESTA (Brazilian pop and funk). Other nights, the vibe is more international, with lots of reggaeton and Latin beats.
GALERIA CAFÉ – @galeriacaferio
Open Thursday to Sunday. Known for pop hits and a mostly tourist crowd—not the most authentic Brazilian vibe, but fun if you’re in the mood for a dance floor and familiar beats.
💃🏽 RIO GAY CLUBS
THE HOME – @thehomerio
Rio’s biggest and most iconic gay club, open every Saturday from 11PM. Expect long lines and a packed dance floor. The crowd skews toward shirtless, muscular guys, with electronic music all night. No darkroom, but… let’s just say the bathrooms stay busy.
D-EDGE RIO – @dedgeclubrio
Not exclusively gay, but very gay-friendly and probably the coolest club in town. Top-tier house, disco, and techno with a sleek, stylish vibe. Follow their socials to catch the best nights.
AGYTO – @agytorio
PORTAL – @portalrio_
Both are located in downtown Rio near the iconic Lapa Arches. These clubs attract a younger, diverse crowd (18–30, lots of lesbians), and often throw affordable open-bar parties (under $20 USD!). Expect Brazilian pop, funk, and Latin reggaeton. Open Fridays and Saturdays from 11PM to 5AM.
Rio de Janeiro Best Gay Beaches 2025

IPANEMA BEACH (PRAIA DE IPANEMA) - Of course, the first name that pops into every gay guy’s head when thinking of Rio is Ipanema Beach — and for good reason. It’s the heart of Rio’s gay beach scene. Stretching from Posto 8 in Arpoador (one of the best sunset spots in the city) to Posto 10 at Jardim de Alah, Ipanema is vibrant, welcoming, and totally gay-friendly. If you're looking to connect with the classic Rio beach crowd — think tanned, toned, and shirtless — head to the iconic gay section right in front of Farme de Amoedo Street. That’s where the action is. But if you’re into a different vibe or want to explore other “tribes,” just stroll along the beach. There’s a place for everyone, and you're bound to find the perfect spot where you feel at home.
LEME BEACH (PRAIA DO LEME) - If you’re into more alternative vibes — think artists, LGBTQIA+ activists, and politically progressive folks — Leme Beach is the place to be. The main gay-friendly area is near Barraca Ponto G, easily spotted by its giant rainbow flag. Since Leme is smaller than other beaches, it’s hard to miss and has a cozy, laid-back feel. If you’re looking to chill with the stoner crowd, head over to Barraca do Rasta — just follow the Rastafari flag. It’s a great spot for relaxed beach vibes and good conversations.

ABRICÓ BEACH (PRAIA DO ABRICÓ) - Imagine a little slice of paradise just 75 minutes from South Rio. If you’re looking to escape the city buzz and enjoy some naked sunbathing and swimming, Abricó is a must-visit. Especially if you're staying within Rio de Janeiro city and won’t have time to explore the stunning state coastline, this beach is your wild, off-the-grid getaway. It’s the only official nudist beach in Rio, located on the far western edge of the city. Here, it’s all about nature — no concrete in sight. Just golden sand, ocean waves, dramatic rock formations, rainforest, and surrounding mountains. The vibe is peaceful, open-minded, and deeply connected to the natural world. Getting there isn't the easiest by public transport, but a one-way Uber from South Rio will typically cost under $25 USD. Nudity is encouraged but not mandatory, and the crowd is a relaxed mix of nudism-friendly locals and curious tourists. And yes — there’s a cruising area. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the rocks on the left side of the beach in the late afternoon. You might just meet someone who adds a little extra spice to your day in paradise.
JOATINGA BEACH (PRAIA DA JOATINGA) - Not a gay beach, but one of my favorites. Hidden between the cliffs of the affluent Joá neighborhood, Praia da Joatinga is one of Rio’s best-kept secrets. Surrounded by forested hills and luxury mansions, this small, crescent-shaped beach is only accessible via a short trail and stone path—so bring sneakers or sandals with grip. Its turquoise waters and dramatic landscape create a stunning setting that's popular among surfers, models, influencers, and a younger crowd often playing altinha (a freestyle version of beach soccer). The beach is best visited at low tide when more sand is exposed; at high tide, it can virtually disappear. There's no kiosk or infrastructure, so bring your own snacks, water, and sunscreen. Uber or taxi is the easiest way to get there, as parking is very limited.

RESERVA BEACH (PRAIA DA RESERVA) – Located between Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Praia da Reserva is a long, pristine stretch of sand backed by a protected nature reserve. It’s a favorite for those seeking a quieter beach day, far from the chaos of Ipanema or Copacabana. The crowd here is more mixed—locals, families, and surfers looking for clean waves and serenity. Despite its seclusion, the beach has some kiosks offering drinks, seafood, and shade. Because of its size, it's easy to find a peaceful spot even on busy weekends. It’s ideal for long walks, biking along the beachfront trail, or simply relaxing with fewer interruptions. It's most conveniently reached by car or Uber. If you're up for having some afterbeach fun, check our outside cruising guide to know where to find the action.
RED BEACH (PRAIA VERMELHA) - Tucked beneath the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in the Urca neighborhood, Praia Vermelha is a small, charming beach known for its reddish sand and postcard-worthy views. It's perfect for a relaxing day without straying far from the city center. The calm waters make it ideal for stand-up paddling, swimming, or simply soaking up the sun. It’s a popular spot for locals, couples, and even rock climbers tackling the nearby cliffs. There are a few kiosks and benches along the shore, and it’s located right next to the entrance to the Sugarloaf cable car (Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar), so it’s a great stop before or after a visit to one of Rio’s most famous attractions. Easy to reach by bus, taxi, or bike.

RIO G SPA

Busy after beach hours, especially Friday to Sunday after 5 PM.They enforce a zero drug policy and don’t allow rentboys—so be discreet if you’re carrying anything.
SAUNA CHUPPS

A newer addition to Rio’s scene, Chupps is an all-day, all-night cruising sauna with a laid-back crowd and affordable prices. Expect a mix of people, from partygoers to regulars. While it’s not always packed, it’s worth a shot—especially on theme nights like “Bears,” “Black,” or “Twinks” in partnership with Hornet. Follow their IG for updates.
Best Gay Outside Cruising Rio de Janeiro 2025
⚠️ Outdoor Cruising in Rio: What You Need to Know
First things first: Rio de Janeiro is not Disneyland. It’s a vibrant, exciting city—but one where common sense and a bit of caution go a long way. So let’s start with the basics:
🛑 Safety First
While violent incidents are rare, theft can happen. Most of the time, if someone tries to rob you and you don’t resist, things will be fine. Never fight back—your safety is more important than your belongings. If you’re heading out for an outdoor cruising adventure, leave your phone at home or at your accommodation. Bring just enough cash for a taxi ride back, and consider using Uber to get there safely.

🌴 OUTDOOR GAY CRUISING SPOTS IN RIO 2025
These places are popular among locals and visitors alike for discreet encounters. As always, be respectful, discreet, and safe. Most of these places are best visited in the late afternoon or after dark. Let’s get into it:
🛹 Arpoador Park – Skate Slope
📍 Exact location
Located in Garota de Ipanema Park, Arpoador. Enter through the beach entrance and walk up the ramp—behind the skate slope, you’ll often find guys hanging out in the bushes. It’s busiest in the late afternoons, especially on sunny days. The park officially closes at 7PM.
🌅 Pedra do Arpoador
📍Exact location
This iconic rock at the end of Ipanema Beach is known for its stunning sunsets—and after dark, for its cruising scene. It gained viral fame in 2025 after a New Year’s Eve incident referred to as the “Surubão do Arpoador.” Since then, police presence has supposedly increased, but in practice, it remains a popular spot.
🌳 Aterro do Flamengo
📍 Exact location
A massive park stretching through Flamengo, Botafogo, Glória, and Catete. During the day, it’s filled with joggers, skaters, and families. After dark, things change. Cruising happens throughout the park, but the most active spot is near the parking lot by Assador Rio’s steakhouse.
🏖️ Praia de Abricó (Nudist Beach)
📍 Exact location
Rio’s only official nude beach is about an hour from the South Zone, but it’s worth the trip. Super chill, incredibly beautiful, and very gay-friendly—especially on the left side of the beach (facing the ocean). Expect a flirty atmosphere and some discreet fun around the rocks at sunset. Drinks are available at beach kiosks.
🌊 Praia da Reserva
📍 Exact location
Located further west, this beach is quieter and more secluded—ideal for late-night fun. Cruising starts after dark, with peak times on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, especially following sunny days. A good second stop after a day at Abricó.
🌆 Rua do Leite (Only for the Bold)
📍 Exact location
This one’s intense. Known as "Milk Street" (real name: Rua Dagmar da Fonseca in Madureira), it’s in North Rio, a much rougher part of town. The danger level here is significantly higher than in the South Zone. Cruising starts late (after 10PM), with peak hours in the early morning. Go only if you’re very experienced and cautious.
🙌 Final Tips
-
Trust your instincts—if something feels off, leave.
-
Don't bring valuables (especially phones, wallets, or jewelry).
-
Avoid going alone if you're not familiar with the area.
-
Always prioritize your safety over a quick thrill.
Rio has a wild, free-spirited side—but the smarter you play, the more you'll enjoy it.
Rio de Janeiro Customized Gay Tours 2025

FORGET ABOUT THE STAGED FAVELA TOURS
Rio’s communities are so much more than a photo op. If you're curious to experience the real energy of a favela, from everyday life to the electric baile funk parties, I can connect you with a local LGBTQIAPN+ guide who actually lives there.
This isn’t just a tour—it’s a chance to engage with authentic culture, hear personal stories, and directly support the people who make these neighborhoods vibrant and unique. You'll leave with unforgettable memories—and the knowledge that your visit made a difference.
Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro
IPANEMA - Obviously the main gay destination in Rio. It can be really packed with tourists specially during summer. The neighborhood is very well conected by metro and has a huge variety of bars and restaurants. I advise choosing another area if you want to have a more local experience. Avoid the studio apartments in Sá Ferreira and Jangadeiros streets - there are many rentboys and drugdealers living in these buildings so your safety should first. Posto 10 area is my favorite.
COPACABANA- Just don't stay in Copacabana. It used to be glamorous and fancy till the 80's. Now it's chaotic, crowded and full of pickpockets. There's nothing really interesting in Copacabana, but you probably find the cheapest options in South Rio.
LEBLON- It's the right side of Ipanema (the neighboorhoods and the beaches are separated through a channel that goest from Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon to the beach. It's the most expensive square meter in Rio, where most of the famous rich celebrities live. As anywhere in Rio it can be considered gay friendly but there's also a lot of conservative people who doesn't have any idea of class counciousness. Not one of my favorites also.
BOTAFOGO- Considered the hipster and younger area of Rio de Janeiro you will find a lot of cool places to eat and drink. Ideal for people on their early twenties open for a randon connection in a bar.
GLÓRIA- Listed by Time Out as one of the 10 coolest neighboorhoods in the world, this are has been going through a quickly gentrification process. The closest beach is Praia da Gloria and since a few months ago the beach has been reported as proper for swimming, so a lot of people who lives in Flamengo/Catete/Gloria area choose to go there. The view from the beach is amazing - you can see both the Sugar Loaf in front of you and the Corcovado behind.
BARRA DA TIJUCA- Unless you are coming to Rio for something specific like a music concert (Rock in Rio) or a sport event, I would also not recommend to stay in Barra. It doesn't even look like you're in Rio. People are known to be rude and very conservative. The beach is beautiful, but is really far from every cool place you will want to visit during your stay.
My favorite areas in Rio are actually the less touristic ones. As there are not many hotels on them, maybe you want to check an Airbnb in Jardim Botânico (surrounded by the rain forest, close to the city waterfalls and with a lot of handicraft slow fashion local shops) and Laranjeiras (bohemian, known to be the more left wing politically oriented neighboorhood in Rio, where the young couples with or without kids choose to live and with a lot of street food markets on the weekends).
